OMG it's Pliny! Sep. 7th, 2008 @ 04:45 am
Pliny the Elder is on tap! at the Grey Lodge Pub in the Northeast section of Philadelphia. it was tapped around 10 PM this Saturday night. it was a half keg that was tapped but don't expect this beer to last long. they tapped a half keg of it at Capones last Thursday. tap time at 11:30 AM and it didnt last longer than 6 PM that evening. not sure how busy Grey Lodge was this Saturday night for the 4 hours of remaining business but word of the Elder has already been spread and combined with the Grey Lodge's already successful Sunday brunch starting at 11 AM......but honestly, I don't expect this keg of one of the finest beers IN THE WORLD to last long into the afternoon. so get it while it's pouring!

the new George A. Romero?

seriously, guy is fucking phenomenal! stop producing movies and stick to directing! please! he hasn't directed a movie since Scrapbook in 2000 and Deadwood Park (2007) was just incredible! his horror vision and the way he depicts it in his cinematography can't be topped!

you know what I like May. 30th, 2008 @ 03:35 am
I finally cancelled the premium channels with my cable service and am using the money saved for a Netflix account (finally, I know, really!) I'll be saving $30 a month on the cable bill and the Netflix will only cost me $14 a month, why I didn't do this before I don't know! it's not like I ever watch TV cuz there is nothing ever on it that I'd want to watch, and I can still watch comedy central and stuff on-demand as well as FearNET.

anyway, so I got one of those 1 month free trials and plan on using it as much as possible.

so far I've put 6 movies in my queue.

I'm always looking for more suggestions. anyone who has read this journal knows what I like

so far I have

Deadwood Park
Savage Harvest 2
I Spit on Your Corpse
Severed Head Network 2
Meat Market 2
All Night Long Vol 1 (the only movie of the 6 that I've already seen but I own 2 and would like to watch all 3 in order again)

Daisy freaked out pretty bad last night. she was chewing her rawhide bone in bed whilst I was watching Creepshow 2. I reached over to pet her head and I guess she got "food/toy aggressive" and growled and bit my hand. nothing serious just a little slice on my index finger. as soon as she did it she knew she fucked up. she put down her bone and just sat in bed quivering and shaking, her head down and her ears back. she seriously looked like she wanted to kill herself like "omg I'm so sorry I can't believe I bit you why the fuck did I do that I'm so sorry".

right now I'm about to take her out to Wissahickon Park for a nice hiking adventure.

» two catastrophic blade injuries
the end results of the game sucked for me, but man this whole series of events where Downies skate accidentally slices the linesmans throat open (60 stitches and a broken jaw) and then all hell breaks loose. and as there is blood gushing (I mean gushing, literally a trail of blood everywhere he went) from the linesmans throat, he's still trying to break up the fights while the other refs are trying to stop him from getting involved which meant there was nobody there to stop the fights!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR_6DolqYcM&eurl=

another crazy event. Zednik's throat gets sliced by his own teammate, Jokinen. you might not all be able to watch this. well actually the cameras cut away it was so gruesome. he severed (almost completely severed!) an artery. they said that when he was not covering his throat with his glove blood was spurting a whopping 15 feet! what's most amazing is that the guy obviously knew his life was in danger (if he was anywhere but a professional sporting event he'd probably be dead) and had the peace of mind to rush himself over to the bench and get immediate medical attention. they were able to put the artery back together and he'll be fine, but wow. and to think that that after the surgery was over, his first question was "when can I play again". amazing.

» now I feel sick to my stomach
was walking Daisy in the park late at night. a stray dog comes up to us and I let Daisy play with him. Daisy hasn't really had the opportunity to play with many other dogs one-on-one like that because most other dog owners get scared cuz she's a pitbull and all. Daisy actually played really nice with him though. I was proud. she even let him sniff her.....well you know what.

anyway, it was finally time to go and the dog followed us all the way home. I didn't know what else to do so I took it in my backyard and took some pictures of it and posted it on a few sites hoping that someone would recognize it. then I went back inside to get it some food and when I went back outside, I saw him in the neighbors yard! soon it was hopping their fence into their adjoining neighbors yard, and from there, it continued on down the line.

I even took Daisy for another walk hoping to see it, but no such luck.

now I just feel so bad. I was just hoping it would hang around until 8 AM. then I don't know what I'd do. take it to the shelter, hope that it's family had enough sense to contact them and see if anyone had dropped their dog off?

anyway, it's all pointless cuz the dog is gone now. and I feel bad for both it and it's family. fuck shit fuck!

here's a picture of the poor guy

» Wissahickon River valley
easily the most awesome place in all of Philadelphia.

took Daisy there today. we walked around for a good 3 hours until it got dark and cold and I had had enough. she hadn't though, even after 3 hours she was still pulling me in every which way trying to get me to lead down another trail.

started off at Valley Green, then walked west until we reached the first bridge across the river. the trails across from the Valley Green are much nicer than the ones on the same side as Valley Green, imo.

started off hiking some pretty advanced trails. as in, I'd probably have trouble hiking these trails by myself, let alone with a dog that likes to pull. going uphill as not nearly as difficult as going down, as always in hiking, but especially with her. sometimes I was afriad I'd end up eating dirt of worse, tumbling all the way down the hill into the river.

so I decided on less advanced trails. I couldn't find a lot of my favorite spots. that's how huge this place is. but I did finally stumbled upon Shakespeare Rock on the way back, where we shared a sammich and some tamari almonds before heading over to Devils Pool.

she's still a little timid about crossing the river (even in spots where it's shallow and ample rocks to step on) but she's getting better. we followed one of the tributaries to Devils Pool, a little too far apparently. got completely off trail, lost in the woods. there weren't many people out in the first place, let alone in the middle of the woods. I thought I heard something, but it was just a herd of deer. finally found our way back to Devil's Pool, ironically, right at 4:20. did that. then took a shit in the woods. what a great feeling that was. started off back to Valley Green and some guy was running with two dogs and Daisy went for them, twisted my leg (the one which I had broke) behind me. it was pretty scary, but no harm done.

walked around a little bit more and ran right into a herd of deer. the buck just stood and stared at me, from about 20 yards away. we stared back and forth like this before he finally took his doe and his fawnn and went running back off into the woods. it made me think, what kind of jackass goes into the woods to shoot these things with something other than a camera. I guess a retard would.

here's like a dozen pics from our adventure

» tenant rights
anybody have knowledge of know of a good website that outlines tenant rights, particularly in Pennsylvania which I've been told has some of the best tenant rights.

basically I've been living in the same place since last April. about 18 months. cupcake moved in this past August.

well without going into a long story. I have a really shitty front porch that is quite delapidated (sp?). like it literally looks like it could crash on my head any day now. today I noticed that the landlord received a letter from the department of Licenses and Inspection. I'm wonder if they're being threatened. I kind of hope they are!

we have no door knob on the bathroom door. not only not a knob, not even a hole. so you can't even stick your fingers through it and pull it closed or what not.

and our back door. well let's just say I know a lot of squats with a better, more secure, back door (and front porch!) than we have. it must be a century old. literally. so many different people have put different locks in it, there's so many holes in it (some plugged up by play-do!) and right now, the doorknob is essentially non-functioning, and the only "lock" on the door is a slide-lock (not even a really durable one!). I can put a master-lock on the outside, but if I do that and I'm inside, I have to go all the way around the side of the house to unlock it.

it's a seriously fucked up situation.

we really like the neighborhood though, and aside from t hese major problems, we kind of like the house. I know, it sounds weird. we re-signed the lease in September, and they still havne't given us a copy of it (I have the original from last april). I know they agreed to give us a new back door and even put in storm windows, but it's now november and still have not heard from them.

I was wondering if anyone has done a rent strike? what do you need to do before that? we were thinking of giving them a letter saying we want so and so done and until it is, we'll put rent in escrow.

I dunno, any advice would be appreciated.

oh also, I think it's state law that the landlord is supposed to supply 68 degree heat through the winter. how is this determined? our gas bill is usually around $45 except in the winter. in the wiinter it gets as high as $200, and we keep the heat low!
» tofurkey and tofutti
just had to profess my love for these companies.

I remember when vegan cheese and vegan lunch meat sucked. and yes I know this post is mostly repetitive, but I just had a sammich with tofurkey roast turkey lunch meat in the middle surrounded by tofutti mozarella and tofutti cheddar on each side with a squirt of mustard on both slices of bread and it is fucking phenomenal

» I'm not a hipster, but....
everyone has their own definition of what a hipster is. generally hipsters are the "cool" kids who are fully supported by their parents and hence, have no need to acquire a real job. they're sort of like the trust fund kids. but I know plenty of hipsters that have jobs. it's like there's some sort of hierarchy of hipster-ness, where the hipsters who have jobs look down on the trust fund hipsters. I say fuck em all. I really hate hipsters. snotty pretentious arrogant pricks.

ok I forget where I was going with this. I don't even remember why I was so pissed off at hipsters all of a sudden. maybe it's cuz I work with a lot of the hipsters who work kind of hipsters. the hipsters who don't realize that they're hipsters, they mock the hipsters who don't have jobs and have a full ride from their parents, but they don't understand that they still look down on people who have "inferior" taste in music and they still wear all expensive designer clothes and they still drink shitty cheap beer as if to say "hey, I'm not rich, if I were rich would I be drinking PBR?". okay, maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but what is with hipsters and their need to drink PBR. I mean I know it's part of the hipster code of fitting in, and I know hipsters don't want to give away their identity as being members of the snooty middle class, but c'mon. no matter how much PBR you drink the S&P company (the company that owns Pabst and hence Strohs, Shlitz and a number of other shitty beers) isn't going to start writing you endorsement checks.

now I still can't remember why I really wanted to write a livejournal entry. seriously, I didn't come on here to rant about hipsters. or did I?

mmmm......well anyway, fuck hipsters.

about the Day of the Dead remake. first of all, the writers and such for this movie didn't even know that his name is BUB! not bud, but BUB! jesus mary and joseph! I know that these people have not one creative cell in their body and that's why they need to remake everything instead of actually creating something from scratch, but at least get one of the lead characters names right! and to make matters worse, Bub....or excuse me, Bud....the reason he's such a docile zombie, is because......now get this.....he was a vegetarian in his previous, human life! wtf is this shit! oh and apparently he drives a car in the movie. now I'm all for zombie comedies, I happen to love them, but this is muther phucking DAY OF THE DEAD, not Shaun of the Dead!

» holy NHL FA deadline!
Flyers continued to do everything right. well a lot of things right.

today they acquired Daniel Briere from the Buffablow Sabres. haha. it's going to be so fun to see that team suck again and thier crappy fans fall off the wagon again.

they also traded Pitkanen and Sanderson for Lupol and Jason Smith.

now their lines look something like this, in my head

Gagne-Briere-Lupol
Upshall- Carter- Knuble
Hartnell- Richards- Umberger
Eager-Potulny-Kapanen

Smith-Timmonen
Hatcher-Coburn
Kukkonen- Goat, Picard, Jones

Biron- Niitty

holy shit does that look good. I think they still have some trade bait in Umberger and Goat and the 4th line still needs a legit heavy, but damn!
